TOP STORY: One year ago this week, then No. 1 Green Hope fell to No. 2 Hough in the North Carolina Class 4A state final, which also produced what was then titled the POWERADE FAB 50 national title. This year, Green Hope and Hough are each one win away from another state final clash, and again the top spot will be on the line. But this year, it appears Hough’s roll — if it happens — will be as spoiler to No. 1. If Green Hope does win the 4A state title this week, it will mean the Raleigh power would have gone coast-to-coast as the only No. 1 team this season in the ESR Top 50.

BIG MOVER: Cardinal Gibbons (Raleigh, N.C.). Gibbons, who avenged one regular-season loss and pushed top-ranked Green Hope before falling 2-1, jumped 12 spots to No. 38 after reaching the Class 3A state semifinals.

NEWCOMERS: No. 39 Chantilly (Chantilly, Va.), No. 42 Blue Valley North (Overland Park, Kan.), No. 44 Charter (Wilmington, Del.), No. 45 Franklin (Elk Grove, Calif.), No. 46 Mountain Brook (Mountain Brook, Ala.), No. 47 Millard West (Omaha, Neb.), No. 48 Parkview (Lilburn, Ga.) and No. 50 Charlotte Catholic (Charlotte, N.C.).

NOTES: The spring season includes the following states: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California (spring), Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Georgia, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Rankings through matches played as of May 19, 2013

Season complete. Oklahoma Class 6A state champion.
School Facts: Private, 850 students in grades 9-12.
Notes: Katie Sprouse’s overtime goal lifted Bishop Kelley to a 3-2 victory over Jenks in the state final pitting a pair of nationally ranked programs. The Comets have won four straight titles and 14 in the past 15 years. The team’s only setback this season was in the Heart of America final to St. Teresa’s (Mo.). Bishop Kelley started the season ranked No. 2, and becomes the first to clinch a Top 10 final ranking. This year’s senior class was led by six NCAA Division I signees: Darienne Chapman (Tulsa), Bailey Haydock (Michigan), Claire Kelley (Arkansas), Kaela Little (Notre Dame), Katie Sprouse (Clemson) and Kristie Wilburn (Orla Roberts).
Fun Fact: Bishop Kelley High School was created in 1960 as a response to the closing of Tulsa’s two previous Catholic high schools — Holy Family and Marquette, which had dated to the early 1900s.

Notes: Katie MacGinnitie scored twice as Marist cruised to a 5-0 win over Columbus in the state final. Marist’s defense held Columbus without a shot until the second half. Marist outscored its five playoff opponents 40-0, and posted 18 shutouts on the season. The lone blemish on Marist’s record was a draw with McIntosh, a team that was soundly defeated by fellow Top 25-ranked St. Pius.
Fun Fact: When Marist opened its doors in October 1901, the school was a boys military school known as Marist College.

Westfield suffered a district tournament setback to Chantilly, but the result was merely window dressing. Westfield, which has a win over No. 11 Battlefield, already won the district regular-season title and secured a berth in this week’s regional tournament. It’s this week’s results that will hold more bearing on the team’s future ranking.

Season complete. California Sac-Joaquin Section Division III champion.
School Facts: Public, 1,700 students in grades 9-12.
Notes: Mel Hoskins scored twice and Paige Borgorgno set up a pair of goals as Rio Americano cruised to a 5-0 win over Benicia in the section final. The win marked Rio’s third straight section crown. Despite being classified in Division III, Rio provided its worth during the regular season, which included shutout wins over Division I champion Franklin (2-0) and runner-up Davis (3-0).
Fun Fact: When Debbie Meyer was a 16-year-old student at Rio Americano in 1968, she became the first swimmer to win three individual gold medals in the Olympic Games, claiming the 200-, 400- and 800-meter titles at the 1968 Mexico City Games. To this day, no other female has ever won three individual freestyle gold medals in a single Olympics appearance.

Fun Fact: Lake Norman originally was built to house 1,300 students. The population expansion in the area resulted in a new wing being added to the school, which now houses the Freshmen Academy — about 600 students.

TOP STORY: This year’s spring playoffs have been anything but predictable in the large-school classifications. This past week, Berkmar, with a largely ho-hum regular season, vaulted into the national picture with a Georgia Class AAAAAA title. Then there was Irmo in South Carolina, an eight-loss team in legendary coach Phil Savitz’s final year at the helm, collecting a surprise South Carolina Class 4A crown. So far, the only large-school state title favorites to seal the deal have been Omaha South (Neb.), Vestavia Hills (Ala.) and Northside (Ark.).

BIG MOVER: St. Joseph’s (Greenville, S.C.). Of the teams in last week’s ranking, St. Joseph’s made the greatest leap, moving up 16 spots after being the only pre-tournament favorite to end up with a state title in the Palmetto state.

NEWCOMERS: No. 19 Berkmar (Lilburn, Ga.), No. 26 Houston County (Warner-Robins, Ga.), No. 27 Iowa City (Iowa City, Iowa), No. 30 Union (Camas, Wash.), No. 32 Farragut (Knoxville, Tenn.), No. 33 Irmo (Columbia, S.C.), No. 34 Lexington (Lexington, S.C.), No. 39 Monacan (Richmond, Va.), No. 40 James River (Midlothian, Va.), No. 41 Forest Park (Woodbridge, Va.), No. 43 Glynn Academy (Brunswick, Ga.), No. 46 Collins Hill (Suwanee, Ga.) and No. 50 Northside (Fort Smith, Ark.). Ten of those schools are making return visits to the ESR Top 50 this week.

NOTES: The spring season includes the following states: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Iowa, Georgia, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wyoming.

Rankings through matches played as of May 19, 2013

The Packers delivered 133 goals and finished with 20 shutouts — both Nebraska state records — in winning the program’s first soccer state title, and first state championship of any kind since 1990. An announced crowd of 8,200 witnessed the final, which broke the previous state final record by more than 1,300 spectators. Junior standout Michael Jaime led the team with 30 goals and 13 assists, despite being listed as a defender and playing primarily a defensive roll against top-ranked teams. Senior Seyag Moreno, the team’s starting keeper, finished with 20 shutouts. Three seniors have committed to college soccer programs from a program that was a runner-up in 2010 and lost to eventual champ Creighton Prep in the 2011 and 2012 semifinals. This season’s Omaha South squad, coached by Joe Maass, is being touted as among the best high school teams ever assembled in Nebraska, and its case is buoyed by three shutout wins over Creighton Prep, which is loaded with college-bound talent, was averaging more than four goals per match and was aiming to become the first three-peat soccer state champion in Nebraska.
Fun Fact: Omaha South’s enrollment is capped at 2,222 — and the school had to turn away more than 150 potential freshmen during the 2012-13 school year.

Chris Perez added a goal to cap the scoring. Lorenzo, the Gatorade Player of the Year for Georgia, finished the season with 24 goals and 28 assists. McIntosh recorded 21 shutouts in 2013 and allowed only two goals. In addition to pinning the only loss on Houston County, McIntosh defeated Class AAAAAA state runner-up Collins Hill 3-0, perennial AAAAAA state challenger Starr’s Mill 3-0. The team is coached by Bunky Colvin.
Fun Fact: Peachtree City, a suburb of Atlanta, has a 90-mile network of multiuse paths for pedestrians, cyclists and golf cart drivers. In fact, it’s not unusual to see teens driving golf carts around the community as a main mode of transportation since the posted age to drive a golf cart in Peachtree City is 12, provided the youngster is accompanied by an adult.

Manzo added an insurance tally in the second half as St. Pius defeated Woodward Academy 2-0 in the state final. The victory marked St. Pius’ third title in five seasons and completed a boys-girls title sweep, as the St. Pius girls won a Class AAA crown earlier in the day. Ryan Beck recorded the shutout for St. Pius, which had 16 on the season. The team is coached by David O’Shea.
Fun Fact: St. Pius’ most notable soccer product is Ricardo Clark, a member of the U.S. National Team and the MLS Houston Dynamo. Dalton defeated Southeast Whitfield three times this season, and that’s the same Southeast Whitfield squad that tied Top 25-ranked East Coweta. The Catamounts tied in the 2003 state final.

In its 28th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with USA TODAY High School Sports, today announced Will Horstmann of Jackson Hole High School as its 2012-13 Gatorade Wyoming Boys Soccer Player of the Year. Horstmann is the second Gatorade Wyoming Boys Soccer Player of the Year to be chosen from Jackson Hole High School.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Horstmann as Wyoming’s best high school boys soccer player.

The 5-foot-7, 145-pound junior forward has led the Broncs to a 14-0 record and a berth in the Class 3A state tournament, scheduled to begin May 16. Horstmann scored 18 goals and passed for 12 assists in the regular season. A First Team All-State selection, he was the Class 3A Underclassman of the Year in 2012.

Horstmann has maintained a 3.66 GPA in the classroom. A member of his school’s Key Club and robotics team, he has volunteered on behalf of a local homeless shelter and Kids Across America, which provides summer camp experiences for urban youth.

“You have to pay special attention to him every game,” said Dick Edgcomb, head coach at Buffalo High. “He’s very fast, very skilled. He’s got good footwork and he’s a real positive leader for that team.”

Horstmann will begin his senior year of high school this fall.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by the Gatorade high school sports leadership team in partnership with USA TODAY High School Sports, which work with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of accomplished, veteran prep sports journalists to determine the state winners in each sport.

Horstmann joins recent Gatorade Wyoming Boys Soccer Players of the Year Vitor Nazareth (2011-12, Laramie High School), Kasey Esponda (2010–11, Buffalo High School), Kevin Cox (2009-10, Cheyenne Central), Ben Borin (2008–09, Cheyenne East High School), Zach Johnson (2007-08, Kelly Walsh), and Sam Hayden (2006-07, Jackson Hole) among the state’s list of former award winners.
